 My father emerged into this world in what was called the "caul."
...A child born in this way is known as a caulbearer.  It has been calculated caulbearer births may be as few as one in 80,000 births.  This type of birth is extremely rare and is sometimes called a "veiled birth" since the child is born with a "veil."
...In medieval times, they saw this as a sign of good luck.  It was considered an omen that the child was destined for greatness.
Popular European legends developed throughout history for the caulbearer suggesting that possession of a baby's caul would protect that person from death by drowning.     Because a caul was highly prized by sailors, medieval women often sold these to sailors for large sums of money as it was regarded as a valuable talisman.
...The Scottish believe a child born in the caul will become fey, or psychic.
...Another myth states they are made from the nightgown of Jesus, and everyone must respect the person as he may become a saint someday.  The British and the Icelandic culture all have their beliefs including once the person who was born in the caul passes, its spiritual significance can move to another family member...and that is where I come in...
