Inspirational People in My Life - (1) HERBERT

His attestation papers for World War I stated his year of birth as 1896 because his mother permitted him to change it from 1899 to make him the eligible age to join the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish) CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) in the Great War.

In the trenches, shellfire landing close to my grandfather deafened him in one ear, forcing him back home from Amiens, France. Only a hundred years later, tucked away in some vintage silverware we found a R. M. S. Aquitania tea spoon confirming the hospital ship he returned home on.
  
It's hard to speculate on circumstances in a different lifetime...

Later, here in Canada, Herbert met his wife, my grandmother Elizabeth, who served in the war as a nurse. They married in July 1918, which was just before the end of the war,...and were married for over 50 years.

​Yet I only knew him as my Grandfather--my Papa.
